Refining Gems are used to increase the Power Rating (PR) of armor, weapons, and accessories. There is a chance of failure which may downgrade the Power Rating.
All Normal and Good quality gems can be purchased from Refining Merchants such as Alice Habin in Varanas Lower City West and Audrey Habin in Glory Square of the Obsidian Stronghold. Other Refining Merchants found throughout the world will sell only a limited range of gems. Item Shop quality gems must be purchased from the Item Shop or from a Phirius Merchant. The level required to use the item you want to upgrade must be no lower than Min Target Level to no higher than Max Target Level. They can be used to raise an items Power Rating from Min Target Initial PR to a maximum of Max PR. Failure reduces the PR by 1 but cannot reduce the PR lower than Min Guaranteed PR.
The Success Rate for Basic and Improved gems is based against a Common item. The higher the quality of the target item, the lower the Success Rate. Success Rate also goes down as the Power Rating rises within the range allowed. In any case, Improved are better than Basic and, of course, First-Rate's Success Rate is always 100%. All Refining Gems gain a bonus chance of success when the type of gem matches the time of day. Daytime for Sun jewels, all others at night.
Refining Gems come in four types, three tiers, 5 Power Rating ranges and a range of level caps.
All Refining Gems have a Maximum Stack Size of 30.
Improved and First-Rate gems have no Minimum Target Level
Improved and First-Rate gems for level caps of 50, 60, 70 and 80 are no longer available. Above level 40 you have no choice but to use the Elven and Starsplinter gems
It is a good plan to use only Basic gems to get your item to +12, then use the expensive Improved and/or First-Rate gems. After all, Gold has very little true value in this game and is easy to come by. Of course, if money is no object, First-Rate gems are the way to go.
Note: Even for those gems that have not been removed from the game, not all gems are available for purchase at all times.
